About the club
Tyneside Loipers has its roots back in 1982 when a club was
formed at Tynemouth College near Newcastle. Membership expanded
throughout the NorthEast, with the plentiful local snow in
the 80's leading to a membership of over 100. We now have
fewer members, reflecting the relative lack of snow in recent
years. Our membership base is still based in the NorthEast,
but we do have members further afield and even abroad.
The relative lack of local snow is actually not as bad as
it might seem. Like them or not, the abundance of relatively
cheap flights have made the snow of countries such as Norway
and Switzerland more accessible to us all, and we have a number
of members active in different parts of the world during the
season.
Past and present members include a number of professional
instructors and guides for holiday companies; former national
team competitors; and adventurous expedition-goers. However,
the majority of the membership are simply a sociable group
of all ages and abilities, who love to get around on skis
of one sort or another.
